pot metal handle repair ....possible ??
« on: November 20, 2009, 11:06:55 PM »
I have a broken window crank handle, (1928), that has a clean break across the middle of it. Is there anyway to glue this back together. I was thinking of drilling a hole in both sides at approx the same location on each side to give it a kind of "glue pocket". has anyone tried something like this , or have any suggestions. thanks in advance

My experience on pot metal of that age is, Forget It.

There are people out there that make them or will make them  for you.

I am not familiar with the shape of the Winder, but is it possible to carefully drill a hole in each end, a fair way up into the parts and insert a reinforcing rod, and then gluie the pieces back together using something like JB Weld?

Rick,

I had good luck in welding pot/pewter with Muggy Weld rods especially for pieces that are under some strain and JB Weld was not able to hold.  Because of the heat its use is limited around pieces that could be damage by the heat unless they can be removed.

Wayne.. I believe you .  In which case , the handle is worth experimenting with .  Soooo...... I will give a shot at the rod and JB weld idea that Bruce mentioned . Thats right along the lines of what I was thinking of giving a shot at . Nothing lost , so let's  see what happens !  When that fails.. !??/ ..I will be muggy welding..!!  Next... ...re-pop..arghhh.
