Barrett-Jackson Must Hate Cadillacs
« on: January 23, 2010, 04:30:59 PM »
Why is it that whenever a nice Cadillac--like the black '58 Biarritz comes up, they insist on going to a commercial, or one of their silly games ? They seem to do it with all nice luxury convertibles ! But heaven forbid we miss a Corvette, or Carroll Shelby ! Well, at least they showed some of it !

That's exactly why they do it.

Most people want to see the Mustangs and Camaros so that's what they show to keep the viewers happy and the ratings up.

I have noticed that too.   Even the dime a dozen chopped flame jobbed small block chevy equipped hot rods get plenty of time.   Now that I think about it I dont know where you were watching it but I was on Speed Channel and it would not surprise me one bit that their primary demographic of viewer is the small block chevy mopar mullet shelby wanna be sort of person.   Not that there is anything wrong with that, a car enthusiast is a car enthusiast and I have at least some respect for all of them.  Its likely Speed Channel that does not see any money in covering our sort of cars.  Im sure BJ likes Caddies just fine because a commission on a 100K Caddy is better for them than a 50K muscle car.

I know what you mean.   I'd rather see some of the stock looking cars go across the block instead of all the muscle cars.

I'm flying down to Palm Beach, Florida for the Barrett Jackson auction in april.   Anyone else going to be there?

BJ probably do it so that they can get actual living people to go to the Auctions.

When I get a chance, I watch the Macom Auctions when they show up on the TV down here, and all we get to see id the Corvettes, Tri 5 Chevs and Chevelles.   When a nice car appears to be on next, they jump to another Corvette, or something similar.

It is all about "Ratings" I think.

It's pretty much the same with the car shows here in North Carolina. If i take my 58 Biarritz, '76 Bicentennial , or my '61 Continental conv to a show, I overhear the "would look better with 22's on it " comments. I don't bother with the shows any longer !

I went to the Palm Beach BJ auction a few years ago.  Be advised, if you are not a bidder, you can't get very close to the action at all.

How do they know who is going to be a bidder, or a simple watcher?

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe you have to register to be a bidder.  When you register you have a number to hold up when you bid.  If you don’t have a number they might not let you near the stage.

You have to register and you get a badge on a lanyard.  In Scottsdale it's $500.00.  It's less in Florida.

You have to be pre-qualified to be a bidder, and have credit references from your bank or some line of credit set up.  And don't forget the Buyer's Premium of (I think) 10%.
You would think Craig Jackson would smile more when they sell these big dollar cars!

If you watch the event in Scottsdale, the bidder's area is HUGE, and even those seated need the big video screens to see the cars.

I prefer local cars, Craig's list, and Ebay.

Ah ha, so it is the money before you actually get the chance to purchase ANYTHING.

I have never attended any Auction which required any prior fee to be paid, and never will.

What with the Sellers' Commission, and the Buyers' Commission, and then these Bidders' Fees, no wonder they can have TV Coverage.

Oh it's more expensive than that.    You have to send them a $10,000 deposit to regisiter to bid.  Plus your SS# and bank line of credit and the usual credit reports.
no thanks.     We're going to get in with spectator tickets.   You can get up close and person with the cars before they roll up to the bidding platform.     It's probably a good thing NOT to get up close during the bidding process.  I don't need to get caught up in a bidding frenzy and buy something I shouldn't.    LOL.

As for t.v. coverage, you can bet B-J gets paid for that too!

I heard them mention last night that removal of your vehicle by transport has to be arranged with an authorized transporter.  That tells me that "authorized" transporters pay B-J for the right to be authorized!

I had the same observation/frustration on cutting away when it comes to Oldsmobiles, especially the '48 Woody wagon.

David,

You will have a great time.  The cars are all outside in tents and you can talk to some of the car owners about the cars.  There are a lot of cars there, and there are some really nice vendors inside selling collectibles.

The only thing is like I said, you cannot sit in the bidders area, and we got a little tired of walking around and watching from the rear and the sides, but overall, it's worth going there for sure.  They have single day tickets and weekend passes too.

Enjoy!

Back ten years ago and more, Gita and I used to attend the BJ auction mainly to take pictures of some fascinating cars. You could get in, with no restrictions, for about $20.  When they upped the prices around 2000-2001 (?) and started selling "bidder" paddles and asking for bank guarantees, I just quit going.

Now it's a rich man's game.  I continue with my less expensive pastimes and am none the worse for it. To each his own and the devil take the rest ...which he apparently did at the RM auction on Saturday!

Perhaps you mean the Russo & Steele Auction on Thursday
