39 LaSalle Convertible paint
« on: February 12, 2010, 05:09:33 PM »
My convertible came from the factory with GM code paint # 60 with RHINSHED-MASON Trinidad Grey irridescent paint with red wheels. I found an R&M paint dealer to get a sample of that color but the problem I am having is that the grey paint on the firewall and cowl under the hood ,the hollow header that clamps to the top of the windshield ,nd the 2 irons on the top of each door window that are part of the top bow assembly, and the inside of the trunk are painted a dark non metallic grey which is not the same color as the outside of the body.  Were these items not painted the body color?  So my question is:  What color were these items painted. Would appreciate any thoughts on this. Also are the door posts this same color , grey as the other items or body color.

The firewall & door jambs are likely the original color. The outside apparently has a had a quicky paint job..

Ederm:

The firewall etc. on your car would be the correct color. Those early iridescent paints had a very fine and small amount of the "iridescent" material in them. In comparing the later metallics to them, the old colors show up as non metallic. I have had two cars that were Oxblood maroon iridescent and it is very hard to see the metallic, but under the right light and with polishing the paint, it is there. The challenge is to get the paint store to mix the original color correctly with the proper size and amount of metallic, otherwise the car won't look original.

The top bow and the pieces over the doors should have been originally painted tan. If they were painted body color,it was either a special order or was done after the car left the factory. I assume your car is a '39 Cadillac or LaSalle convertible coupe. The Authenticity Manuals have this information.

Hi ederm

Go to the top of this page and click on the clink that says CLC Home

Then, look at the long, unorganized, randomly listed links on the left hand side.

Arbitrarily placed somewhere in that list is a link that says, Authenticity Manuals.

Click on that and look for the one you want.

Can anyone say, "alphabetical order"?
