Wanted! Anybody with 1938 Cadillac car or parts to sell
« on: February 12, 2010, 09:00:27 PM »
I'm putting this out there for a friend of mine who bought a perfect body 1938 Cadillac but found someone began to street rod it in the frame and undercarriage. Needs the front seat and a bunch of misc. trim etc. Please let me know if you have something of interest or can recommend us to anyone who has one of these. He desires to restore this back to original and undo the customizing attempts. Thanks! Chuck Dykstra Portage, MI  chuckdykstra@charter.net

Hello, I have for sale a 1938 Cadillac Sixty Special with factory glass divider.  Full CCCA Classic. Called the Cadillac-Cord model because of the look alike Cord grill which is different from all other 1938 Cadilla grills.  The glass divider was not offered as an option on the 1938 Sixty Specials and believed to be a proto-type.  Extremely rare, complete and original.  Restoration is in porgresss with recent completed valve replacement.  Engine is running great.  $16,500.  Tel: 518-872-1119 or JPMCARDOLL@AOL.COM.

Joe,
Have you ever gotten an invoice on your car? What does the data plate show? I sure would be curious if I owned that car.

Hello Bob,  Thanks for your comments and to answer your questions about this car: (1) the data plate information is: VIN 6273528, Style: 38-6019S, Body: 3495, Trim 40A.  When I received the building sheet I received the following hand written note from Matt Larson, co-author of the book: "LaSalle, Cadillac's Companion Car".
"3/6/06 Joseph, very interesting.  I have been in the hobby 45 yers and dealing with the records for 15 years  - never heard of a 1938 60S with a dividion glass.  The record sheet for your car does not show a Special Body Order number and there is no notation about a divider glass or anything else unusual.  The usual production summaries also do not list the two 1938 60 Special Convertible Sedans, the 1938 60 Special Coupe, numerous two-tone paint jobs on these cars, etc. I wish I could prove for you that the dividion wass done by Cadillac, but there are no such records. Matt Larson, Cadillac Archivist."
I will try and post a photo of the glass divider which will show that it looks like a GM divider with Bedford Cord upholstry, which matches the rest of the entire.  Joe

I too am looking for 1938 Cadillac parts. I have a 1938 Cadillac 7523 series and I need a front window regulator and lense for the dome light. If anyone can help me, please send me an email. jackgrimes@hotmail.com

Jack,
The dome light lenses come up on eBay Motors every so often, they were used for several years before 1941.  There have been 2 separate auctions (same vendor) on eBay Motors in the last two weeks or so for these lenses but they quickly went over my budget, especially the first one.  The first went for $170 as I remember and the second with a trim plate that was somewhat pitted went for $82 against my $81 bid.

If the front window regulator is the same as 1935 I may have one, you will have to tell me if a '35 will fit your application.

Good luck.

Not 100% sure about the '38's but the '36's and '37's with the Imperial division have the frame of the dicvision interrupting the headliner (i.e., the timber frame of the division runs both sides and over the top of the opening and the headliner butts up to this frame either side).

From your photo the glass seems to just contact the headliner and that headliner seems continuous.

Suggests to me that the division was added later and is not original.

Someone with a bigger series '38 Imperial might be able to elaborate because I wouldn't have though Cadillac would have come up with a special design for an Imperial division for a 60S if they had a box full of bigger series divisions around.

Hi all,the 38 90 series cars had jump seats,or some had a little storage compartment,it is commonly called a bar?,my 38 has the surround all the way up the sides and top,it has the jump seats too?,i would say the 38 60s is a factory car, looks to good to be cobbled together.here is apicture of mine, there are many similaritys in them.HTH Harvey B

I have what I remember as a 1938 grill that I got in a trade several years ago...I had always wanted to put it on the car I wanted to buy but time and money have not permitted.  So I will be posting it on ebay in the morning.  Contact me for more information if interested.  Thank you.

Jack, just give you a wider scope, I'm sure you will find the 36 Buick uses the same window regulator, I might even have one myself but I live a long way away.

There were many Cadillac's that had dividers added later by custom houses outside of Cadillac.  For example, there was a 1940 62 series with a divider on ebay not so long ago.... the divider looked to be factory, but was in fact a creation of an outside custom shop.... Derham or ???? can't remember.  Also, Fleetwood supplied cars with all manner of divisions... Imperial division had a complete wood frame around the divider glass...... "X" division had a glass that was curved on each end and kissed up against the head liner.... also the "bar" referred to in a prior post was probably a package compartment commonly installed in large series cars that did not have jump or opera seats.... although there were instances of actual bars being installed in the division wall.... once saw a '40 V16 at Hickory Corners that had a factory installed bar, but it was quite elegant with two small opposing doors hinged right and left, rather than the package compartment with the large, hinged at the bottom, pull down door.
