propane is about 112 octane. the only problem was getting it filled on a trip. most conversions allowed you to switch back and forth to gasoline

 Yes, propane has a very high octane rating, but a very low heat content. These conversions were popular in the 70's and 80-'s, but quickly fell out of favour as the cost of propane came up. Also, since propane has such a low heat content, the power is generally way off on these cars.
