Fender welt was used in the 1920's through the late 1940's to cushion and fill any gaps between body panels and fenders. Installation has always been a chore because welting comes without holes where the bolts go and notches where the welting makes tight bends. Lots of trial and error test fitting is common.
To make installing fender welt easy, apply double back carpet tape to the body between the bolt holes. Then stick the fender welt to the tape along the body lines cutting around the holes for the bolts and notches in the backing material as needed for a flat smooth installation. This can be done in one step with a good pair of scissors. Test fit the fender to ensure the welting is where it belongs. Adjustments can be made as needed and bolting is easy because the welt is stuck where you want it. After the fender is bolted loosely the welt can be fine tuned using a sharpened paint stick or a bondo spreader to lift or tuck the welt into final alignment. Adjusting the fender welt is easy because it comes off the tape more readily than the smooth body panel. The fender welt stays in place while the fender bolts are tightened. It won't shift or slip out where there might be a loose fit between the body and fender. Don Comstock
