1941 Radio removal
« on: February 27, 2010, 05:46:57 PM »
I am looking for some pointers on the easiest way to remove the (original) AM radio from my 1941 series 61 coupe. It worked when i bought the car a few years ago, but has ceased putting out sound.
Laying on the front floor, from the passenger footwell side, I am not seeing the attachments and hardware to access this removal. Is there anything that i need to do from in front of the radio itself (other than removing the knobs)? When it is out, i hope to have the tubes checked and the radio repaired locally, although any suggestions on that score would be cool, too.
Pardon the basic nature of this question.....am just a raw beginner in the classic car restoration game.  :)
Thanks Much,
Pete Clement

First, you get some Allen wrenches and take off the knobs. Under them, are nuts. But before removing them, get down on your neck (Hogshair burn coming up...) and reach up and pull the antenna lead out from one side. Then, take the power leads loose. Then, there is a brace that has a nut on one side or the other that you remove. Now, (I believe) you can loosen the nuts under the knobs and balancing the radio from underneath, take the whole thing out. It's been years since I've done this, and will welcome any corrections. But it's not really all that hard to do once you figure out what has to be taken loose from the wiring and the antenna lead. Good luck.

Reach up on the right side of the radio near the top and you will find 3 vacuum hoses which are used to raise or lower the antenna by pushing or pulling the right radio knob.  Pull the middle hose and mark it as the middle hose and then pull the other two hoses and mark them as to what port, front or back port. The middle vacuum hose carries the main vacuum from the engine and needs to be connected to the middle vacuum port on the radio. The other two hoses provide the vacuum to raise or lower the antenna but you need to have the main vacuum hose in the middle vacuum port. Make sure you have one hand on the underside of the radio when you loosen the nuts underneath the radio knobs. After the nuts are removed, push the radio back and it should slid down and out. The radio is heavier than you think.

Everything Bill And Barry have written is correct, but there is more.
After removing the two knobs, you cannot access the 5/8" nuts behind the knobs yet. There are little chrome trim pieces about 2" by 3", one behind each knob, that have to come off. Each one is held by a small nut(3/8" I think) behind the panel. Do the right one first, since it is difficult to reach. Then do the left one-they really made that one almost impossible to reach. After that, the rest of the job is easy, following Bill and Barry's advice.

Thanks for the great tiips!   I'll try all of this today.
The radio is actually pretty neat. On the face, there are little printed tags under the glass, with the call sign letters of several Seattle area stations. Most of them still exst today.

It will be fun to have it working again.

It came out exactly as you all indicated. Discovered that the brace was missing...will fab and install a new one when it goes back in.

Thanks to everyone for the help.
