What are people using for a muffler these days on a flathead?

Frank: I used Waldron Muffler for the muffler and tail pipe on my 47, web site and picture of the muffler below

Hi Bill again!

Wow!  I'm dazzled!

I went onto Waldron's site (thanks for the reference) and found the muffler.

I had SS mufflers on another car (Citroen SM) and they were a bit noisy - someone told me the normal carbon buildup on the metal surface which provides some sound deadening won't adhere to SS.  Is your exhaust at all noisy?

Bob LeCoque (a club authority on these cars, and owner of a 47 60S) said the original muffler had offset inlet and outlet openings.  The pictured muffler appears to have inline outlets, and so does the drawing in the parts manual.  I can't find a factory picture of the underside of the car.  What was the old muffler on your car like?

Is this chassis presently like this in your garage, or is this a pix from some time ago?

Frank

Hi Frank: The picture of my 47 muffler was taken at an angle. The muffler does have offset inlet and outlet as original. I got the car in about 86 and it did not have the original muffler. I believe Walker was the original suppler for mufflers. See below the picture of the exhaust system from my parts book The muffler and tailpipe that I got from Waldron are made of what they call aluminized metal, not stainless steel. Stainless is a bit on the noisy side for me. If at all possible save and use your original exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold to muffler. That pipe has a compound curve around the water pump which is extremely hard to duplicate. This original pipe seldom needs changed as they used very heavy gage metal when new. That picture of the muffler and frame was taken about 4 years ago after I had finished the frame and waiting to mount the finshed body.

Hi Bill -

Thanks for the scan.  I have a 41 and a 53 Parts Book, but sometimes the pix aren't for a 47.

Bob LeCoque recommended Kepich Exhaust for an original system, so I ordered that.  It's aluminized metal.  I didn't see anything about an aluminized system on the Waldron site, just the SS products, so I didn't buy from them.  It pays to advertise!  I'll probably keep the downpipe, it looks pretty solid.
