Brake springs Help
« on: March 02, 2010, 03:15:09 PM »
Hello

I have struck out 3 times now looking for brake springs.  I have tried Coopers,  Kantor, and the guy on Ebay selling "All 52 brake springs for a 1936 Cadillac"  It seems they are all too short.  My return springs are  6 1/4 inches long,  they send me 5 1/2 inch springs.   Does anybody know of a late model vehicle using 6 1/4 inch return springs?    or a source for original springs?

My brakes are 14 inch drums in the rear.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Roger

There is a brake parts supply house here in Atlanta called Wheels & Brakes. They sell wholesale and retail brake parts for everything you can think of including large trucks. You might see if there is a similar place near you. Take your spring and start looking at vehicles with similar sized drums. Sympathetic counter men seem to enjoy a challenge they don't see every day. Some guys might recognize your spring right away.

If that fails, try spring suppliers like the ones I've listed below. Search the web, there are a lot of companies like this out there.

Century Spring    http://www.centuryspring.com/products/products.html

Maybe they have one or will make a few for you  http://www.centuryspring.com/products/extension.html

Newcomb Spring  http://www.newcombspring.com/springmaterials.html

WB Jones Spring Co.  http://www.springsfast.com/index.html

If none of the previous suggestions work out, you can always make your own (sort of kidding but you never know):

Detailed instructions on how to make your own springs:

How to make Extension Springs (which is what you need):
