REJUTE OR NOT TO REJUTE
« on: March 07, 2010, 03:16:29 PM »
Hello All:

I am waiting for my carpet that I ordered from Jensens for my 55 Fleetwood. My question is should I replace the jute remove it and install the heat shield material  (the silver stuff) or install both ?

I would use Dynamat for heat and sound insulation. It's much better than jute for both purposes.

I would be inclined to use the modern stuff. No one will see it. It theoretically functions better. And, most important to me since I live in a wet/marine area, it will never mold or rot.
WANTED: Nothing right now, thanks.

Your reasons for going modern (Dynamat) are good, I shall admit.  Having said that, I would seriously question the ability of Dynamat to give the feel of jute padding to the feet?  I presume some type of padding, between the Dynamat and carpet is required if one wants the luxurious feel?

I use another product called Fat Mat   http://www.fatmat.com/  You might consider using some continious foam  carpet padding in addition as long as you don't exceed the original jute thickness and That should really improve things.  I have also been using Fat Mat on my 68 Eldorado door and rear side  panels with good results.

Your car didn't have both?  Later cars like my 71 Riviera used both an asphault sheet and jute.  So I would use both to be like factory.  I buy Peel n' Seal from Lowe's, its much cheaper than dynamat.

hi bob, ive had a lot of old cars over the years & the very best reason to git rid of the jute is 55 years of rot, mold dead varmits, etc.  strip out all of the old stuff, wash the bare floors with bleach water or simple green etc. let it dry out &then put in the new stuff.youll be real glad you did.just because its an old car doesent mean it has to stink like an old musty car.  cadman49

Dynamat is very expensive, but does really work.

But, to get that "Nice" feel of plush carpeting, replace the Jute or Underfelt under the carpet.

Any upholstry shop will have jute.  It might not look exactly like the original, but it functions the same.  Its also super cheap and light compared to dynomat.

The thing about Dynamat is that it isolates outside noise.   Jute just aids in insulating heat, and is an "Underfelt".
