How to do a double flare (brake line) with photos
« on: March 11, 2010, 07:20:52 AM »
I did this for another board where it seems to come up fairly often thought it may be helpful to people here also.

Many people seem to be afraid of making double flares in steel lines, like brake lines.   Here is a how to step by step with pictures.

Here is my cheap imported double flaring set.  I think it was about $15.  For the small lines it works fine, 3/8 and larger its not so good so if I was going to do many larger lines I would spend the money on a better quality tool.

Here is the tubing cutter I find to be the most useful for stuff like fuel and brake lines because it works in tight spaces.  I got it at an autoparts store, I think it was about $20.

I have found with the cheap tools a bit of lube helps a lot.

First step is to measure and cut the line to the proper length.

Next step is VERY IMPORTANT.  Install the fitting nut!!!  Or you will be cutting and flaring again because you cant get it on once you do the flare.

Insert tubing into proper hole with the end sticking out of the side with the bevel and lightly tighten the clamps.
This is the flat side that should be the long side of the tubing.

This is the bevel / countersunk side that the end of the tubing should be sticking out of

Now you set the height of the tubing out of the clamp by setting the proper die with the tip up.  The proper height is the first step of the die.

Now tighten the clamp nut closest to the tubing then tighten the farther one.  This is important because doing the farther one last will give you more leverage to get it tighter.  When they are tight the bars should be touching the full length.

Now insert the proper die with the tip down

Start pressing into the die until the die contacts the bar

Remove the die

Start pressing into the bare tube until it fills the bevel in the bars

Remove the tools and you are done.

 Excellent tutorial, TJ!

It is essential to have a clamp in good condition, otherwise the tube will slip leading to an unsuccessful attempt.

The cheap tools work well for occasional use on smaller lines, as you suggest, but if you are planning on doing a lot of flaring, I would suggest investing in one of the professional tools. They are much pricier, but they will pay for themselves many tines over simply because they work, and for the lack of frustration.

Also, I may add that many of the cars made since the 80's use bubble flared lines. Essentially, flaring them is step one in the procedure.

Thank you very much for this tutorial!  This kind of detailed instruction is something you just can't find in any manual.

TJ,

Email this tutorial to Stampie on the Modified Board. It is perfect for the article section (in my opinion). I just sent him Washburn's carburetor application index (1937-1957). People shouldn't have to re-invent the wheel every time the same question comes up.

Great presentation, thank you. From some restoration literature that I have read long time ago, the question of annealing always pops up when the subject of flaring tubes is presented as some people recommend it and others are against it. I always anneal the tip of the tube before flaring as it helps in softening the metal a bit and makes a neater double flare, and the main claim is to eliminate future cracks. Would you mind please shed some light on annealing tubes before flaring, is it worth it?. Thank you so much.

Lou,
Have you seen any cracked double flared tubes before? I haven't. I inspected hundreds of brake lines in my life and never seen a crack on one, but I'll continue to anneal the tips of the tubes before flaring. Regards.

Just as 411, I’ve also heat/anneal the tube before bending specially in tight radius bends to minimized kinks. There is also a method by filling the tube with liquid soap and freeze it to make tight bends w/no kinks, but that is outside the scope of this post.

To bend tubing, I use a Spring either inside or outside the tubing.

Never fails.

Bruce.

PS.   Great tutorial TJ.
