Online Directory
« on: June 05, 2007, 07:45:45 PM »
I am posting this message for Mr. Glenn Brown as a reminder of our conversation this past weekend at the CCCA Museum Concours.

With the new software, would it be a good idea to re-visit the possibility of making the membership directory available online?  The online version could be password protected and available only to current members.  Members would then be able to opt out of receiving a hard copy.  Looking far into the future, this could become a big money saver for the club.

Yes, having the information available for on-line Members (for a fee) is most definitely the way
to go. I undestand that he AACA Museum is working toward that same goal.  I don't now what
the cost of doing this would be, but this is something the Club needs to consider. It has been discussed
at recent CLMRC Musum Board Meetings.   Mike

C&LC members should be able to access an on-line Directory with a pass word for free.  I would opt for that rather than the hard copy. Hopefully many other members would also and the savings to the club would pay for whatever costs might be involved in putting the Directory on-line.  IMO.

I too would like to see it online, and only accessable to registered Members, but what about those thousands of members without internet access, or handy computers.

And, when travelling, the book is easier to carry.

You're right, the hard copy would still have to be an option.

:) I am on the Internet much of the time and use if for just about everything.  However, I like to browse through the CLC Directory, making notes and highlighting friend's profiles, etc.  While I would probably sometimes access info on line, the book would be my preference if I had to decide between the two.

::) Even with passwords, what about less privacy to members if too much info is available on the Internet?  Hopefully, if CLC goes that route, home addresses and phone numbers now listed in the directory will not be on the Internet.  There is a lot more chance that passwords would be passed on (that's why they call them "passwords") than a CLC member giving up his or her Directory.

An online directory in my opinion would be a serious mistake. With identity theft out of control I would think the CLC has no desire to put themselves in a position where they could be so open to lawsuits. I personally would not allow my information to be put online.

I agree and also want to convey that I do not want my information posted on line under any circumstances.

Liz,

I understand people's concern about identity theft.  It is definitely something that should be seriously considered if an online directory ever became a reality.

Since you said you would not allow your information to be put online I thought you should know that an internet search produced your name, address, telephone, and email in about two seconds.  I will not post a link here to protect your privacy but I would be glad to let you know who has posted your information if you like.

G'day Liz,

I am afraid that Identity theft is a fact of life these days, and all a "Spammer" has to do is get hold of an International Membership Directory, either from Ebay, or any Garage Sale where there is one available, and simply copy everything in it.

Having the White Pages and Yellow Pages online is "almost" the same, but at least ours is better.

We have welcomed the Computer Age with open arms, and an offset of being able to contact other people is everyone can as well.

I personally wouldn't want to see the Directory to be available online, but if it eventually is, I hope that there are safeguards where only Actual Current CLC Members can have access.

Speaking from  unpleasant experiences, when a fellow board member of an organization that I used to belong to, let out all our personal information for the world to see, I believe that the additional exposure and risk for CLC members is not justified by the monetary savings to the club.

If the club ultimately does determine to place the membership directory on line, they should advise everyone far enough in advance for those not wishing to have their personal information on line to opt out of being listed in the directory.

I found out the hard way how easy so called "protected information" can become a matter of public record on various search engines, mine showing up on Google, complete with home address, age and spouse's information. The club should be more concerned about its members than how to save $$ while enacting a debatable "upgrade" for whatever reason.
