View from the Office
Here are the Books. I really have no idea how they do all that they do for you and me. They could possibly be your first contact with the CLC. Considering what I do know, they are patience personified.
Every day, when they sit in front of the computer, it’s go time, and we are fortunate to have both of them as team members.
We are Mike and Nancy Book, and for the past 14 years, we have had the privilege and honor of representing the Cadillac & LaSalle Club as the Office administrators. We have also held that same position in the Buick Club of America for the past 15 years.
It was our work in the BCA Office that led to us being recruited for the CLC. Jay Ann Edmunds, our predecessor, had wanted to retire to have more time to travel with her husband, former CLC President Bill Edmunds.
When Jay Ann presented the idea of retirement to the board of directors, John Baines, who was a member of both the BCA and CLC, suggested that someone contact us and look into whether we might be a good fit for the position. The late, great Ron VanGelderen was selected to make contact with us, and the rest is history. We have loved every minute of our time working with the CLC officers and members.
Prior to beginning the current phase of our working careers, Nancy had been involved in office management, before taking time out of her work career to stay at home and raise our two sons. Once they were out on their own, she joined me in the toy sales industry, where I was the national sales manager for a company that produced a variety of battery-operated animals that walked, jumped and made all the appropriate sounds of the animals they represented.
We worked together in that field until and during the first year of working as the BCA Office administrators, which we enjoyed so much that we had begun discussing the possibility of finding another car club to add to our program and retire from the toy industry.
As providence would have it, we got a very cryptic call from Ron, whom we thought was just “picking our brains” for comparison’s sake about how we did things with the BCA. We were always willing to share our ideas and methods with other clubs, so we thought we were just helping Ron with ideas that he could take back to the CLC board of directors. That was actually Ron’s way of interviewing us without our knowing what was going on!
I have always been a “car guy,” having owned more than 175 cars of a variety of makes and models during my life. When I married Nancy, she had no idea what she was getting into, but thankfully, became very fond of my passion for cars because of the travel that we did to car shows and searching for that next great automobile to negotiate to buy!
I served eight years in the U.S. Air Force, with three tours in Vietnam, the last year of which I had to serve after getting married to Nancy, spending two weeks honeymooning, and then leaving for Vietnam again. Our first anniversary was spent 10,000 miles apart! Thank goodness the lady has great patience!
And now you know “the rest of the story,” as Paul Harvey used to quip.
