You Should Have Been There!

The 2017 Grand National event in McLean, Va., was spectacular; you should have been there.
We are entering into a new agreement with Cadillac. This will be to co-produce Grand National events, which will be the new future of our Club. I am very hopeful of this joint venture for all of us. Be sure to attend our next GN in San Marcos, Texas, June 5–9, 2018. This will mark a milestone, that being the 60th anniversary of the CLC.
I met the president of Cadillac, Mr. Johan de Nysschen, prior to the GN Awards Banquet.
In September’s President’s Message, I told you that the Arizona Concours d’Elegance, at the Arizona Biltmore Resort in Phoenix scheduled for January 2018, had been cancelled. A real heartbreaker, since I was hoping to field Cadillacs and LaSalles. Maybe in 2019, if the additional funding happens.
Cadillac had extended an invitation to join their party at the Cadillac House, Saturday, Aug. 19, in Monterey, Calif. The other attendees on the trip were Marsha Redman and Jim III and Lynn Verraster. This event also was spectacular.
I attended the Pebble Beach Concours, held Aug. 20, also in Monterey. Truly a bucket list event for any car guy. My last trip to Pebble Beach was 1992; my, how some things have changed.
This is how I made it to Monterey: Flew into San Jose, Calif., Aug. 19, rented a car, and plugged in Ms. Garmin for directions. Apparently, since the device hadn’t acquired the satellites for California, it didn’t compute. I knew I had to drive south on the 101 Freeway, so off I went. I did see the exit for the Monterey Peninsula, but missed it. Took the next exit, Salinas (think farming community).
I did see a sign, “Welcome to California, visit the information center,” which on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. was closed. Ms. Garmin had now acquired the state of California. I typed in the destination, and off I went again. Through miles of green, leafy vegetables, approximately 15 minutes later, Ms. Garmin proudly announced, “Your destination is on the left.” Found out later my lodging, the “El Swell Motel,” was at the end of the Monterey Airport. Nice jets!
Saturday evening, Cadillac sent a huge, white 2018 Escalade for transportation to the Cadillac House. The driver was an attorney…that’s Cadillac for you. So, this is how the other 1 percent lives. The site was amazing. What else would you expect? Deep in the forest overlooking Monterey Bay, architecture at its best.
Greeted by the new Cadillac model, the CT6, and those tall Cadillac models, sweet. The best of the best, in bourbon, various colored wines and designer tiny food by candlelight. Whoa, Nellie.
Sunday, it was the Pebble Beach Concours, in Monterey, on the 18th fairway of the PB Golf Club. Just saying, you should have been there. They say it’s the people, not the cars, but I could contest that. It was “see and be seen,” and, oh, yeah, look at all those used cars.
2018 BOARD OF DIRECTORS ELECTION
Think about this: you could serve on the National board of directors from 2018–2020!
In 2018, the CLC membership will elect individuals to the board of directors to serve for the two-year term of 2018–2020. If this interests you, then contact the chair of the Nominating Committee, Lars Kneller, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
You need to be a member in good standing and provide a written biography, 150-word limit, stating your qualifications and your goals for the Club. A recent high-resolution photograph is also needed for the submittal.
The deadline for both submittal items is Dec. 15, 2017. The ballot and the candidates’ profiles will be printed on the outer wrap of the February 2018 issue of the self-starter. The new board of directors will be seated at the end of the Grand National board meeting that is to be held Friday, June 8, 2018, in San Marcos, Texas. Thank you for your consideration.
