Our New GN Treasurer
Sunday, March 25, 2018
Here’s Dan Cress, the new CLC treasurer for future Grand Nationals. I met Dan during the Awards Banquet of the 2015 Grand National, held in Brookfield, Wis. My opening remark was, “Do I have a job for you.” He kinda looked like a deer caught in headlights, and still he said, “yes.”
A new position of Grand National treasurer was created to work with the CLC Planning Committee on Grand Nationals in the future. It is separate from the National CLC treasury and will be focused on the accountability and record keeping for Grand Nationals.
I am Dan Cress and live in Oak Creek, Wis., and have been appointed as the new Grand National treasurer. I am currently a member of the Badger Region CLC as its treasurer and newsletter editor. I am also treasurer for our local dachshund club, an office I have held for the past 10 years.
Nine years ago, my wife and I joined the CLC and the Badger Region after we purchased our 1984 Cadillac Sedan de Ville. It is a survivor vehicle and is pretty much in original condition. It isn’t a 100-point car, but it is in good condition and is one of the last long de Villes, so it is fun and exciting to drive.
I recently retired from Cessna Aircraft Co. after more than 35 years as a corporate accountant. Prior to my tenure at Cessna, I was a loan officer for a couple of years at a bank. My college major was business administration and finance. Some of my duties and experience over the last 35 years consisted of compiling costs, invoicing customers for aircraft maintenance, account reconciliations and customer service. The last 26 years I’ve been based in Milwaukee.
In 2015, the Badger Region hosted the Grand National Meet in Brookfield, Wis., and I volunteered to be the treasurer for the event. This was the first time the Badger Region had ever hosted such an important occasion. I hope many of you were able to attend and enjoy the events of our Grand National.
That Grand National might not have happened without the National CLC helping with the initial venue selection. We then would not have been able to showcase Wisconsin and the Milwaukee area to make a memorable Grand National.
At the closing Awards Banquet, Dave Ritchie, CLC president, approached me and told me of the plans for a Grand National Committee and the need for a treasurer.
He explained the vision of the National CLC being there to help those Regions who want to host a Grand National and promote their geographical areas, but maybe don’t have the resources. Dave thought I would be a good candidate and asked me to consider the position.
After being approved by the CLC board of directors at the CLC Museum & Research Center Fall Festival in September 2016, our first assignment is the upcoming 2018 Grand National in San Marcos, Texas. I believe everyone on the Planning Committee is excited to get started and make the event a great Grand National.
I see this approach to future Grand Nationals as a positive way for Regions that might not have stepped up before to get involved with a Grand National. It will be exciting to see where our future travels will take us in the coming years. I hope to see you there!
